About Female Bettas

Domestic Betta splendens are a fish that comes in a variety of colors and patterns, rather than a specific color. This is due to extensive selection of ornamental colors beginning in the 1900s. Female bettas tend to remain smaller than male bettas, along with shorter finnage. Females tend to be kept singly, or in a community tank with multiple females, called a "sorority". Sororities require careful planning to ensure that your female bettas remain stress-free and thrive within the aquarium.

Husbandry & Care

Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive. Domestic bettas can vary in aggression on an individual basis.

Minimum Tank Size: 5 Gallons for a single betta; 20 gallons for a sorority of 5+ individuals with a densely planted aquarium.

Water Temperature: 78-84 °F

Water pH: 6.0-8.0

Social Group: Solitary, or in a female-only group

Diet: Carnivorous; Frozen Bloodworms/Brine Shrimp, Commercial Betta Diets, Live Flightless Fruit Flies

Compatible with: Neon Tetras, Bristlenose Plecos, Catfish (Corydoradinae), Amano Shrimp, Harlequin Rasboras, Chili Rasboras, Kuhli Loaches
